Last month, I met an amazing young girl named Drew. One word that could describe her is REMARKABLE! Drew is in Middle School in Sherman Oaks, Ca. She chose Underwear for Africa as her Civics Academy project. She told me her goal was to collect 50 pairs. I asked Drew why she chose U for A for her project and she simply stated, “I got to thinking … how could something so ordinary and inexpensive, be so desperately needed by the children in Africa? I really felt an overwhelming desire to help.”
Well, she got working!
She designed this amazing poster and started collecting. Her Mom, Gloria, and her neighbor, Merridith Gonzalez, got to work. She said that she received positive reactions from everyone she encountered!
After the project was over, and underwear was counted, the final number was 680 pairs. That’s right, 680 pairs!! This is the largest donation we have ever received in Underwear for Africa history! The most exciting thing for me was meeting her. But really, I’m so excited that she wants to continue helping MFFO and the U for A project!! I asked what she felt when the project was finished and Drew said, “I felt like I’m making a difference in the world and I accomplished what I set out to do!”
And she did!
More than she will ever know! We will be bringing this batch to Kenya with us in January, 2010. We’ve had more donations in the past month too! I’ll be counting and posting those in the following weeks!!
I just wanted to say Thank You to Drew and her amazing parents. I am so very proud to know her and call her my new friend. Thank you Richard and Gloria, and all the amazing adults that helped and supported her in this amazing effort.
Thank you for supporting Mothers Fighting for Others and Underwear for Africa!
