Yesterday, I was doing research on Domestic Violence Shelters in Nevada. The one that stood out was S.A.F.E. House. Here is a little information from their site:

S.A.F.E. House was established in 1994 by a group of community leaders concerned about the needs of battered women and their children. Today, through safe shelter, support, advocacy, counseling and community education, the organization provides a comprehensive approach to working with families to Stop Abuse in the Family Environment.

Mission:
S.A.F.E. House is stopping violence and abuse in the family environment by providing safe shelter, support, advocacy, counseling and education.

Goals:
S.A.F.E. House will provide quality crisis intervention, shelter and counseling services to domestic violence victims and their children and accredited treatment services for those who choose to abuse.

June 13, 2008 Weekend Challenge - Donate A Phone®

June 12, 2008 | Leave a Comment

donate a phone domestic violence mffo.orgSo how many of you have old cell phones sitting in a drawer? What about your brothers or sisters? Neighbors? Cousins? What about your best friends sisters boyfriend? You get the picture. For me, I know I have two.

Why are they just sitting in my drawer taking up space and collecting dust? Well, I’m done with them. I received an email from the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence yesterday letting me know about their 2008 National Conference. I spent some time around the site and the Donate a Phone Program jumped out at me. They describe it as:

NCADV has partnered with The Wireless Foundation for over seven years through the CALL TO PROTECT program which was created to provide victims of domestic violence who may encounter emergency situations with free cell phones for that use. The collection of deactivated cell and wireless phones for this purpose has literally saved hundreds of lives over the course of our partnership. In addition to phones being distributed for emergency use, proceeds from the sale of phones not utilized for emergency use help fund agencies that work to end violence in the home, such as NCADV.

So my challenge to you is to go find as many phones as you can get your hands on. Make sure the phone is deactivated, is turned off, and has a battery before mailing it off.

Sound like an easy plan?

Well, I made it even easier. You can download a free mailing label and send it on its way this weekend. Don’t forget to ask your friends and family too!

Have a great weekend.

June 6, 2008 Weekend Challenge… Challenge Yourself

June 6, 2008 | 1 Comment

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend. I hope it is not stressful. I hope you can take a moment and take a deep breathe outside and stop for one moment and say to yourself, “I am happy to be alive and I am exactly where I am suppose to be.”

I want you to contemplate about the trials and tribulations that God, the Universe, The Greater Power, whatever you believe in, has placed on you, and it is happening right now for a reason. Do not ask, “Why is this happening to me?” but “What can I learn from it?”

I am a believer that things happen for a reason.

People come in and out of our lives to teach us something about ourselves. Problems that occur in our lives are happening to teach or reteach us the things that we have not, or have refused to learn.limits.jpg

That is how life works. If the same hard times keep happening to us, it is because we have not learned the lesson from it yet. Let us take this opportunity to be aware, to learn, to grow and become the people we want to be.

I am done with hoping to do things.

Today, I will step outside. I will take a deep breathe. I will look into the sky and know that I am the one who put limitations on myself. I am my own worst enemy. I will then close my eyes, smile and look up into the bright blue sky and know that my truth is, “the sky is my limit.” I have no boundaries to the things that are possible. I have no limitations. I challenge you to break those limitations. I challenge you to start thinking differently.

My life has just begun. How about yours?

May 30, 2008 Weekend Challenge: It’s a Small World After All…

May 30, 2008 | 9 Comments

We always seem to say, “It’s a small world.”

But the things that are happening within our own country and abroad can seem so far away, because it may not be happening to us here at home. I know many people who just don’t want to know. They have great hearts, but stories of tragedies just cause them too much pain.

The definition of Apathy is a state of indifference — where an individual has an absence of interest or concern to certain aspects of emotional, social, or physical life.

The words, apathy and indifference are powerful. Question: Is it just as bad to be indifferent about child slavery than to be the one to sell the child? If we know about it, and do nothing, what does that make us?

It can be overwhelming.

I am overwhelmed all the time about such subjects as child slavery, genocide, and the state of our our own foster care system. I can’t ignore it, because I know it’s happening. Then the ongoing questions start popping in my head: What can I do? Who am I to do anything about what is happening today in Darfur? How can I help the woman escaping North Korea? How can I help wounded soldiers and their families here at home? It can go on all day.

Then I take a breath.

Because I know the first step out of indifference and apathy is knowledge. So everyday, I read the news. I start with CNN, then to BBC and lastly, to Reuters. Because the saying, “Knowledge is Power” is the first step of exiting our own “cul-de-sac” mentality. Our small world becomes large. Then once you make that connection to the Mother who lost her family to war in the Congo, or to the child that was sold into slavery by their parents, the world can become small once again.

It comes full circle.

So today’s challenge is simply to read. Read about our world and what is happening to our global brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers, and most importantly to our children. Take that first step. Make the connection and believe that it is a small world after all.

The weekend is here and it is time for the Weekend Challenge.food pantry MFFO.ORG

I’m going to kill two birds with one stone this weekend. I’m going to clean and organize my pantry and head on over to our local food bank to drop off some donations.

Sounds pretty easy, doesn’t it? Well, it is.

The quickest way to locate your nearest food pantry is to simply Google it. I typed in California Food Bank. You can also check out America’s Second Harvest Food Bank and go to the Food Bank Locator.

So get moving. Clean out that pantry and help your community.

It’s that simple!
