Building a Better Heart

I have a volunteer’s heart.
I want to help.
I want to make it better.
I want you to feel better, to live longer, to smile.
I want to ease a little of your burden so that you can walk with a lighter step.
I don’t even need to know your name.
And I don’t need you to know mine.
I just want it to be better.
Because I have a volunteer’s heart.

But what I need is an activist’s heart.
Because can I see the difference.
My volunteer heart will give.
My activist heart would whisper encouragement.
It would speak out about injustice.
It would dig in its heels and say this is wrong and it must change.
And then it would start the change.
It would gather others to help.
And it would not stop until the world was better.
My volunteer heart will give you a blanket when you’re cold.
My activist heart could get a crew together to build you a warm house.
And then get you to help build the next one.

I’m learning to build a better heart.
